Ye treaders down of cities, ye that cast Temples to desolation, and lay waste Tombs, the untrodden sanctuaries where lie The ancient dead; yourselves so soon to die!

Sorry if the title is sexist. I make this point because most of the best known translations have been undertaken by very qualified and scholarly men (University of Chicago editions are a must have for anyone interest in Greek Drama--Richard Lattimore version extremely clear and literal,) but there was nuance that I, as a male reader, simply missed in these versions. However, Hamilton was one of the great classical scholars of the 20th century, and as qualified as anyone to approach this or any Greek play. What she has given us with her Trojan Women is a lasting treasure--a woman's story myth translated by a woman! To state it again, there is nuance in this play that most male translators seem to miss. For instance, I didn't get the full force of Cassandra's vitriol until read the Hamilton, rather, I completely mis-interpreted her lines. Everyone should read this version, but especially women and girls. I plan to give it to my niece when she turns 12.Product details

Clarity of feelings and ideas . . . unspeakable brutality and the power of women supporting each other in aftermath of epic struggle . . . tenderness and experiences of undiluted grief from which deepest learning is learned.
Arrived on time and as described.
Not what I was expecting from the book its more of a play than history, but that is okay too. I like plays as well.
The play is good, though not my favorite tragedy, the conversion to is good, and the price is great. I really appreciate that makes these public domain books available to us. Yes, I could get it direct from Project Gutenberg, but this way handles the admin and distribution to my .
Having seen a staged production of this text at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, DC, I am looking forward to reading the text in detail. In the theater, this was a powerful, painful confrontation of the effects of war on the victims -- the women and children. No heroes, no vainglorious praise of war. Just the horrors of surviving and loss. Troy becomes every war-devastated landscape. The parallels to Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, etc., etc. were not to be denied.
Rudell is able to bridge the centuries and make Troy contemporary. The language is both elevated (in the style of classic tragedy) and immediate in its emotional impact.
Trojan Women is a classic on the aftermath of war. What happens to the women of the losing side? Mostly told through the eyes of Hecuba the wife of Priam, we find out the destinations of the rest of the women and the child of Hector.
This was tranlsated into rhyming stanzas, unfortunately in the version they all run together so there's no rhythm to reading it, capital letters that signify the beginning of a new line is thrown in the middle and it's a little confusing.
I put a number of books in this series on kindle for a trip visiting old sites around the Mediterranean. they were all free. I found them uninteresting- although I was seeing the sites at the time, poorly written and possibly outdated. Not happy with tthis series- I would suggest PAYING for books on the sme topics.
